Types of Higher Education Instututes

  • Residential colleges
  • Universities
  • Polytechnic and Research Universities
  • Junior colleges and Vocational schools
  • Virtual colleges

An university can be composed of several academic buildings situated along city streets, such as the College hall at University of Pennsylvania, Blanche Levy Park at College Hall, Locust Street (Philadelphia), or Locust Walk.

In order to create a successful campus plan, architects need to understand the nature of the univeristy that they are working with, and be flexible in programming since education and educational settings change over time. Designers need to consider the context of the instutions (relative the surrounding towns for example) and design to foster in-person interactions.

A Campus form is often a combination of buildings and open space, landscape system and mobility network.

Attention to growth is also critical in campus planning, involving assessing existing academic buildings and predict future trends.

Campus life is important to attact prospective students and benefit current students of an institution. Its quality depends of the quality of social life, study space, recreational spaces and more.

Sustainability has been an important integral part of campus planning in recent years and involves aspects from policy to design and operation of the facilities.

Context is important in campus design, since understanding the evolution of spatial settings would lead to better planning of the future. Designers need to study both historic context as well as physical contexts. Not only existing conditions and land use maps need to be analyzed, but also the topographic conditions and local climates need to be considered.

Academic uses and Open space types are important to evaluate in parallel, since this study is critical in developing campus facilities and achieve better campus life.
