Description
The house at 47 Hang Bac street is about 150 years old. It was built around 1880s and has an area of 206 m2. The house is comprised of 3 main segments, each possesses a light well. Currently the house accommodates 5 families with 20 people. This process of densification, often seen in the Old quarter, reduces the living area per person as well as their access to natural lighting and ventilation. This degradation is, in fact, not new. This wooden house had been collapse 3 times in the past, and the most recent incendie happned 20 years ago. The house was deemed heritage by the city of Hanoi and was decided to be preserved. The city began the renovation design for the house in 2005. But in reality, the renovation project is difficult, due to the complexity of property possession and the relationship between the homeowners and the tenants.
